about

Donald Ayler lived and died in his brother's shadow. Almost forgotten but for the few sides he cut alongside Albert and a couple of rough-hewn lives tracks of his own band, made notable because his brother was there alongside him. But with a formidable sound on trumpet, he helped create some of the most challenging music of the 1960s, then disappeared for ten years to briefly resurface with a 3-album set recorded in Italy (now so long out-of-print that few know it even exists) and a handful of gigs in his home country. Then he was gone again...

This is our tribute.
We haven't tried to recreate his sound or his soul.
We haven't tried to pastiche the Ayler brothers music.
In the seven pieces on this album, we've tried to form sonic pictures that tell the briefest outline of a complex tale, from birth to death, of a man that we respect as a musician and as a man for the trials that life placed before him.

As is our customary practice, we have taken free-reign with the sounds that we have encountered to create this piece. Some of it is borrowed, some of it created and some of it is lifted. All of it manipulated, with the exception of two excerpts of an interview with Donald. As such, his is the only contribution that we have credited.

We give thanks to all of the other anonymous contributions, whether they can be recognised or not, and thanks most of all to Donald Ayler, the Brimstone Trumpet, for the music that he left behind.
