about

This is Alfie's 8th solo album, his fifth on bass guitar. It's rare for bass players to get some much freedom to explore their ideas. Rarer still is for the bass guitar to be put at the forefront. Double bass players like William Parker, Joelle Leandre, Barre Phillips have found innumerable sources of sound on the upright, with huge leaps in technique, especially in the use of the bow. But for an instrument where plucking is about as far as it goes?

When recording these tracks, I asked Alfie about his focus on a singular technique: Dyspraxia, he answered, I can't get my head around how to use the bow, I rely on my hands to feel the rhythm, the sound."

It's not something I've considered too often - all those people in the string sections, left hand darting all over the place, right arm slowly gliding to a seemingly different beat... It takes a lot to be able to work magic like that. But then it also takes a lot to know your limitations and to still set as your goal the creation of beauty...
