Those that have been looking to write-off Gravesend Fats as a novelty act playing with a novelty instrument need to start sitting up and taking some notice. We're already four albums and two EPs in, with this latest release kicking in his fifth long player! Add to that his numerous appearances with Beat Jazz Combo and you have, in a little over a year, a truly fierce dedication to creating an original sound and approach.

Along with a rare cover version that perhaps demonstrates so clearly his deconstructive approach to melodic form, it is also good to hear his approach to composition, with elements of one tune fragmenting into others.

So it's about time to quit thinking of the ukulele as the cheap toy that you throw at the kids. Gravesend Fats has caught it and shown it has something to say.
