about

Documentaries about the birth of the 60s will tell you about how everyone was terrified about the end of the world and the Cuban missile crisis. But that was over in a matter of weeks and all that was left was the burgeoning age of prosperity and love.

Then came the '70s... the real age of fear. The age of love had ended in riots, street-fighting and the spreading word of just what level of inhumanity people were sinking to across the world. America was giving the gift of napalm to anyone who disagreed, their presidents were being impeached, Europe was racked with strikes and blackouts and the threat of nuclear war still hung heavy over everyone's heads.

Into that maelstrom, the BBC - back when it took risks with programming other than gardening and cookery - brought the character of Nicky Gore to life in what was one of the most terrifying pieces of children's television ever broadcast. The programme - The Changes - is still remembered by many whenever their eyes fall upon an electricity pylon or the drive beneath the high voltage cables spanning between them.

It is into that world of 'the wires' that EBU have stepped with their latest ep, 22 minutes of ambient sounds conjuring up that same dark foreboding that we had back then.
